Our Story
Big Sur could never be a typical IT company. Because Sam isn’t a typical founder.
Big Sur got its start in 1999 with the idea that a business could support traditional values while existing in a modern era. As a young father who was growing tired of the demands of corporate America, Sam Sandusky set out to build a team of likeminded professionals who desired success both at home and at the office. In fact, he wanted to create a business that valued all relationships including employees, clients, suppliers, and the community alike.
But would this be possible? Feasible? And could such ideas truly coexist?
What’s more, such an undertaking would mean focusing his efforts on delivering enterprise-level solutions to the small business, backed by a level of personalized service that was unheard of in the IT industry.
What started as one man’s vision grew into something even more powerful.
Sam figured that starting a business was a lot like starting a family: it would require a lot of faith, and a lot of hard work. He also needed a name for his company – something that symbolized such a sizeable undertaking yet also spoke to his values. At the time, Sam and his wife Lisa lived on Big Sur Drive in Tampa, which also happened to be the location of their honeymoon: Big Sur, California. Sam admired the Big Sur region for its rugged yet remarkable beauty and for its uniqueness, for Big Sur is a protected area with no defined boundaries. So when the idea came to Sam to name his company Big Sur, it just felt right. Because even amidst the challenges of life, treating people with integrity should have no boundaries either.
Quickly the years began to pass. Yet Sam had no idea just how many lives his company would eventually touch, or how large his company would grow to be.
Today, his company is led by a highly driven team of technology professionals who provide dependable, affordable, forward-thinking solutions to a very diverse client base. And just like Sam, each and every person at Big Sur shares his values and belief that all relationships need to be nurtured in order to grow.
In the Book of Matthew, Jesus tells this parable of the mustard seed: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that it can provide shade to the other garden plants, and the birds come and perch in its branches.
The ultimate fulfillment of Sam’s initial dreams.
Big Sur started with a little faith, and today it has grown into “one of the tallest plants in the garden” serving its community and business relationships with integrity while protecting each client’s data and delivering programs that keep their technology platforms healthy and reliable.
